Wednesday Evening Entertainment - Stories of the Mount Washington Area

Have you heard of the Crawford Slide? Do you know about the Crawford Path? Join our locals as they tell you true stories of the White Mountains. Storytelling is the ancient art of conveying events in words, images, and sounds often by improvisation or embellishment. Stories have been shared in every culture and in every land as a means of entertainment, education, preservation of culture and in order to instill moral values. Storytelling has existed as long as humanity has had language. It's the world of myth, of history, of the imagination...it explains life. Every culture has its stories and legends, just as every culture has its storytellers and often revered figures with the magic of the tale in their voices and minds. Stories vary weekly.

Star Spangled Celebration

Independence Day, or the Fourth of July, is the most important national holiday in the United States. It commemorates the formal adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The declaration, written by a committee headed by Thomas Jefferson, is an eloquent statement of the American colonies’ intention to become an independent nation. It broke the formal ties between the colonies and Britain after the American Revolution had begun. The Independence Day celebration is a reminder of the ideals on which the nation was founded.

Summer Lecture Series

Changing Visibility in the White Mountains
John Halstead

The 1977 Clean Air Act requires the U.S. EPA, the states, and federal land managers to protect and restore visibility in wilderness areas such as the Great Gulf and Dry River in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. However, despite national reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions, visibility in most of the northeastern wilderness has declined substantially since the 1970's. Studies have documented that human induced smog conditions have become increasingly worse and average visibility in Class 1 airsheds is now about one-third of natural conditions. Deregulation of electricity production is likely to result in further degradation as consumers switch to low cost fossil fueled generation.

The Rhetorical Primary: Poetry v. Prose
Jennifer Borda

This presentation is a context-ualized a discussion of Presidential candidates Clinton and Obama’s rhetorical style/vision in a more historical accounting of the concept of the rhetorical presidency. The term rhetorical presidency is borrowed from Jeffrey Tulis’s book of the same name, in which he argues that the role of the presidency has changed dramatically in the last 100 years with the president’s role now very rhetorical and closely connected to the people. By considering the role of the presidency within the context of the relationship between presidential discourse, the media, and politics in a democratic society, the presidency then may be viewed as a rhetorical institution. This rhetorical perspective on this institution is significant because the president’s words and ideas have the ability to motivate people to action; to provide a rationale and justification for political decisions; to foster communities within the U.S. and the world; and to ethically set a moral tone for who we are as a nation.

Brilliant slides portray some of our smallest and most intriguing butterflies, and the swallowtails, our largest butterflies. Witness the life cycle of the Black Swallowtail and the Monarch. Learn what to do with caterpillars when we find them, and how to handle cocoons and crysalids. In addition, audiences will learn about the amazing Monarch migration, with photos of the mountains and the people of Mexico. We will learn about some of the issues and tensions of these "wintering grounds" that put the Monarch migration at risk. Questions and answers follow the presentation.
