The Mount Washington Course was restored in 2008 by Brian Silva, using plans drawn up by the original designer, the legendary Donald Ross. The course will provide a great challenge for the field of 120 players, with a combination of brute strength and risk/reward holes that will make for an exciting event.
The Championship is a 54-hole stroke play event featuring a $45,000 purse, with $8,000 going to the winner. Fifty players, plus ties, will earn the right to play in the final round.
Scott Spence, PGA (Carnegie Abbey Club) will be on hand to defend the New England Open title he won at Walpole CC in 2009. The field will also include former champions John Hickson, Dan Diskin, Rick Karbowski and Ron Philo, Jr. – all PGA professionals.
The New England Open field will be determined at two qualifying sites for PGA professionals as well as an open qualifier in conjunction with the New Hampshire Open. Players have also earned exemptions through victories at regional major championships and in New England Wogan point standings, as well as previous champions of the New England Open. The qualifier is split between the Donald Ross-designed Portland CC and The Woodlands Club, with the final round to be held at the latter on Thursday August 26. Each course is arrayed with different challenges, and the field will have to bring their “A” game to survive the test.
Prior to the Championship, a Pro-Am will be held on Monday September 12 to benefit the Copper Cannon youth camp. The camp, located in nearby Franconia Notch, New Hampshire provides free weeklong experiences to youth from across New Hampshire. For more information on how to support this worthy cause and to reserve your team in the Pro-Am, please CLICK HERE.
Larry Magor, Managing Director of the Omni Mount Washington Resort, is looking forward to a great event: “We are thrilled to be hosting New England Open this year. The combination of a great field, our wonderful golf course and a world-class resort experience promises a great week of golf. It is also a pleasure to be supporting the Copper Cannon camp, which has done so much to enrich the lives of youth here in New Hampshire.”
“I am excited to have my fellow PGA professionals travel to northern New Hampshire to experience just how good the Mount Washington Golf Course is following Brian Silva’s renovations,” said Michael Carroll, PGA, Head Professional at the Omni Mount Washington Resort. “The course is going to be a challenge for them. But those who hit quality shots will be rewarded with many opportunities for birdie.”
Admission to the New England Open is free and the public is welcome to come out and watch the event. Updates will be available on line at www.nepga.com.
