MOUNT WASHINGTON RESORT CELEBRATES THE 65TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BRETTON WOODS CONFERENCE
Guests are Welcome to Participate in a Piece of Modern Day History
BRETTON WOODS, NH – JUNE 23, 2009 – Mount Washington Resort, New England’s premier four-season destination, has announced plans to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the Bretton Woods International Monetary Conference with a special Gold Standard package and a variety of activities throughout the weekend of July 24 – 26, 2009, including a panel discussion and special dinner reception on Saturday evening. The historical package includes a two-night stay at The Mount Washington Hotel, complete with daily breakfast and dinner, as well as a special commemorative gift. Rates start at $194.40 per person, based on double occupancy.
The Bretton Woods Conference, also known as the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference, was a meeting of delegates from 44 different countries to agree upon a post-World War II international monetary system. In the post-war economic depression, it was important for all nations to come to an agreement for peace and prosperity worldwide. Through this conference, they successfully established the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), which is currently part of the World Bank.
On Saturday, July 25, guests will be able to visit the Grand Ballroom to take part in a panel discussion regarding the International Monetary Conference. Moderator Myron Kandel, CNN’s founding financial editor, will moderate the discussion and help translate the events of the Bretton Woods Conference into terms that apply to today. Kandel will be joined by James Boughton, Historian of the International Monetary Fund based in Washington, DC; Joseph Brusuelas, an economist from Moody’s Economy.com; Jeffrey S. Coons, Co-Director of Research, Manning & Napier in Rochester, NY; and Ross Gittell, James R Carter Professor & Professor of Management, Whittemore School of Business and Economics, University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH. All guests and speakers will be a part of modern-day history, sitting exactly where the delegates actually sat for 22 days in July of 1944.
The most important aspect of this conference was the creation of the gold standard. By fixing the U.S. dollar to gold, foreign exchange become more efficient to promote economic growth. This helped strengthen the global economy and encourage international trade.
Also on Saturday, July 25, Mount Washington Resort will host a special dinner in the Dining Room. Executive Director of Food and Beverage, Chef Calvin Belknap, and his culinary team led by Chef Edward Swetz will prepare the same six-course meal prepared for the delegates back in 1944 – but with a modern twist.
The Mount Washington Resort is well into an extensive $50 million renovation project. “Everyone here at Mount Washington Resort, specifically the Mount Washington Hotel, is eager to show off our recent refurbishment,” said Patrick Corso, President and CEO of Mount Washington Resort. “The refurbishment has all been done to preserve the historic quality and sense of ‘place’ here in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.”

Mount Washington Resort’s Weekend Package Offers Immersion into American Freedom Experienced through History, Music and Theater

The Second Regiment Light Dragoons, sabers at the ready, begin their long march into battle as part of General George Washington’s Continental Army in the War for Independence. Glimpse Betsy Ross as she stitches the very first American flag. And, listen to the fife and timeless rhythm of marching drums, and find yourself in Gettysburg, awaiting the famous address of President Abraham Lincoln as another chapter of freedom takes root on American soil. Mingle with historic figures, such as Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt; and imagine what it was like to live through their times and become a part of the fabric of America’s history. Mount Washington Resort is pleased to announce a special package, “A Salute to Freedom,” offered the weekend of Friday through Sunday, July 3-5, 2009. There will be appearances of major historical figures in full costume --- you can pose with the former Presidents in a Mt. Rushmore photo opp --- plus storytelling, musical performances, period dance lessons, lectures, dining and a great mix of fun family activities, including a water balloon battle dubbed “The Battle of Wettysburg” --- a light-hearted invitation for guests to bring along their sense of humor, too. There will even be opportunities for the sampling of fine beverages, including the unveiling of Mount Washington Resort’s new signature organic ale. Saturday night, July 4th, will culminate in the “American Celebration Dance” featuring the Hal McIntyre Orchestra, a 1941 spin-off from Glenn Miller’s Orchestra that became a favorite band of American soldiers overseas and has been reborn to continue the dance sounds of the bygone era.

Voted on by a dedicated panel of experts and avid golfers, the Golfweek ratings are among the most prestigious in the golf industry.
Brad Klein, architecture editor stated, “Brian Silva's restoration has made the Mount Washington Course more interesting and more compelling than I ever thought it could be. He sharpened the bunker delineation, brought out the green contours and enabled the long views of the Presidential Mountains to stand in dramatic contrast with the recurring look backs at the magnificent Hotel building itself. He also created a few bold holes to resolve some routing limitations; these holes are far stronger than the originals -- all while making them fit in as part of the whole Donald Ross composition.”

The New England Ski Museum keeps the stories, people and events alive that brought the tradition of skiing into our lives and families through the generations, from Europe to New England --- as a form of transportation, fertile source of competitive sports and coveted, favorite family pastime.
The course for the Bretton Woods Nordic Marathon is 50 kilometers consisting of two 25-kilometer circuits. According to Jeff Leich, Executive Director for the New England Ski Museum, part of the course for the Bretton Woods Nordic Marathon is actually on the grounds of what used to be the golf course for the old Crawford House. The Crawford House was situated where the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Highland Center now stands, at the top of Crawford Notch. “Hannes Schneider used to bring his ski school up to the old Crawford House golf course from Cranmore early-season to get them on the snow, since the snow would fall first in the higher elevations,” said Leich, noting the area’s specific ties to New England’s ski history. The 1982 US National Championships were held at Bretton Woods, hosting such Nordic racing legends as Bill Koch and Tim Caldwell.

According to Chris Ellms, Mount Washington Resort’s Director of Ski Operations, “Bretton Woods often gets these isolated snow flurries --- it’s a combination of high elevation and our location next to Mount Washington. It’s not that unusual, it just seems more pronounced right now because there’s not as much snow on the ground anywhere else yet.” Snow is in the forecast, and the snowmaking guns continue to blast away around-the-clock, as temperatures allow.
