Hiking

On the Trail of Outdoor Adventure

Being in the heart of New Hampshire’s White Mountains means you’re surrounded by one of the most renowned hiking networks in the world. With more than 2,000 miles of trails to explore, you’re perfectly positioned to experience the very best of hiking in the East.

Be Prepared
The White Mountains are breathtaking, and they demand respect. Weather on the higher summits can shift from sunny to dangerous in a matter of minutes, with temperatures dropping dramatically even in summer. Every year, volunteer search and rescue groups as well as New Hampshire Fish and Game conducts dozens of operations in the White Mountains. Many involving hikers who underestimated the terrain, set out without adequate gear, or lost daylight on the trail. Proper footwear, layered clothing, a trail map, plenty of food and water are essential, even if you don’t think you need it. You should not rely solely on a fully charged phone as service is limited. Always let someone know your plan and expected return time.

Leave No Trace
The trails and landscapes surrounding Bretton Woods and the White Mountains are protected lands that generations of hikers have enjoyed and that future visitors deserve to experience just as we do today. Please pack out everything you bring in, stay on marked trails to protect fragile vegetation, and leave rocks, plants, and wildlife exactly as you find them.  Use the restroom before your hike and have a plan.
